Confessions of a Mortgage Insider

Have you wondered why the mortgage and banking industry are in their current shape of disarray? Did you ever wonder how some people managed to get something for nothing and leave us the average tax payer footing the bill? Are you curious why the once respectable mortgage industry became so corrupt and brought the US economy so quickly to its knees?

Denny Andrew's first book, Confessions of a Mortgage Insider, explores how the mortgage brokerage industry went into a spiraling failure that resulted in a complete meltdown of epidemic proportions. Confessions of a Mortgage Insider uncovers more than the excesses of the industry. It explores the people and personalities of those who worked in the industry through the personal stories of leaders, followers, slimy wheeler-dealers, and the victims. It tells the story through the eyes of mortgage broker Rick Agnew. Agnew goes from naïve freshman loan application agent to a diamond level broker whose life is filled with fast cars, fast women and fast parties. His up close and personal experiences with the industry open his eyes to the rampant fraud and chicanery of the industry.

Part story collection, part instruction, and part personal discovery, Andrew's book is a fun and interesting book that makes you angry with the money lust of the brokers, makes you cry for those who are victimized, and laugh at the antics of Rick Agnew the half man/half naughty child protagonist. Using illustrative stories and hilarious hi-jinx this book instructs even the most casual reader on the dangers of the current mortgage failure to the housing market. This book can be that 'tell all' source the casual reader has been seeking to establish some sanity from the current economic crisis in the mortgage industry.

Confessions of a Mortgage Insider prompts the reader to really assess where they are currently in their mortgage and financial stability and then to make a specific plan to get where they want to be. Living in the house of your dreams is not just a wish if you plan carefully and shop wisely for a mortgage and a mortgage broker, according to Andrews. The American dream is not over...it has just become something that once again is only realized through hard work and a good savings plan.

The mortgage bubble has been broken and according to Denny Andrews, it is not a bad thing that the party is over. His exposure of the ugly secrets of such a sleekly designed profiteering machine clearly illustrates the symptoms of our society's pervasive illness: excess. This fast moving book encourages responsible lending and commanding the life choices that promotes accountability and fiduciary common sense. Andrews captures the madness and mayhem through his original stories and then provides sound business advice that everyone can understand.

Summary: Great non-techy book

This book offers the novice and advanced user a non-technical approach without diminishing the important aspects. I am new to Photoshop and within 5 minutes of reading the first chapter, I could make a contact sheet and went forward from there, I'd recommend this book to any one who wants to learn Photoshop without all the technical jargon.

Summary: Best Photoshop book for Photographers
Rating: 5

I've used dozens of Photoshop books over the past 15 years and this is the best because it is informative but more importantly it is designed to be easy to read with useful projects dedicated to every page with big color pictures. Tips are good and because of the well-designed layout of the book they are always easy to find. Only bad thing is the intros to each chapter which are moronic and try to be too cool for their own good.

Summary: Great book for Digital Photography and Photoshop
Rating: 5

This is a good book for any beginning and intermediate digital photography and Photoshop level. The topics and examples are clear and easily to follow.

Summary: Starting Photoshop
Rating: 4

A good book for beginners, and don't forget to read the introduction, gives good info on sample files and images. Great examples and step by step instructions. I am taking photoshop 101 at a local Community College, my instructor uses this book instead of the college book. You have to put up with the writers sarcasm, but overall a great book for beginners to intermediate users of Adobe Photoshop CS 2. Not too much on Type (Text) manipulation, in a rating of 1 to 5, I give this book a 4.

Description

The research reported in this book provides reliable evidence on and knowledge about mathematics and science instruction that emphasizes student understanding--instruction consistent with the needs of students who will be citizens in an increasingly demanding technological world. The National Center for Improving Student Learning in Mathematics and Science--established in 1996 as a research center and funded by the U.S. Department of Education--was instrumental in developing instructional practices supportive of high student achievement in and understanding of mathematics and science concepts. NCISLA researchers worked with teachers, students, and administrators to construct learning environments that exemplify current research and theory about effective learning of mathematics and science. The careful programs of research conducted examined how instructional content and design, assessment, professional development, and organizational support can be designed, implemented, and orchestrated to support the learning of all students. This book presents a summary of the concepts, findings, and conclusions of the Center's research from 1996-2001. In the Introduction, the chapters in this book are situated in terms of the reform movement in school mathematics and school science. Three thematically structured sections focus on, respectively, research directed toward what is involved when students learn mathematics and science with understanding; research on the role of teachers and the problems they face when attempting to teach their students mathematics and science with understanding; and a collaboration among some of the contributors to this volume to gather information about classroom assessment practices and organizational support for reform. Following a preface, this book is divided into four parts. Part I, Introduction, presents the initial chapter of the book: (1) Standards-Based Reform and Teaching for Understanding (T. A. Romberg, T.P. Carpenter, and J. Kwako). Part II, Learning with Understanding, includes: (2) Developing Modeling and Argument in the Elementary Grades (R. Lehrer and L. Schauble); (3) The Generative Potential of Students' Everyday Knowledge in Learning Science (A. S. Rosebery, B. Warren, C. Ballenger, and A. Ogonowski); (4) Developing Algebraic Reasoning in the Elementary School (T. P. Carpenter, L. Levi, P. W. Berman, and M. Pligge); (5) A Teacher-Centered Approach to Algebrafying Elementary Mathematics (J. J. Kaput and M. L. Blanton); (6) Statistical Data Analysis: A Tool for Learning (K. McCain, P. Cobb, and K. Gravemeijer); (7) Modeling for Understanding in Science Education (J. Stewart, C. Passmore, J. Cartier, J. Rudolph, and S. Donovan); (8) Learning Mathematics in High School: Symbolic Places and Family Resemblances (R. Nemirovsky, A. Barros, T. Noble, M. Schnepp, and J. Solomon). Part III, Teaching for Understanding (M. Franke and E. Kazemi) includes: (9) Changing Teachers' Professional Work in Mathematics: One School's Journey (J. Shih, S. Biagetti, and D. Battey); (10) Teacher Collaboration: Focusing on Problems of Practice (D. C. Webb, T. A. Romberg, M. J. Ford, and J. Burrill); and (11) Managing Uncertainty and Creating Technical Knowledge (W. G. Secada and T. Williams). Part IV, Cross-Cutting Studies, includes the final chapters: (12) Research in Assessment Practices (J. de Lange and T. A. Romberg); and (13) Capacity for Change: Organizational Support for Teaching for Understanding (A. Gamoran).

Critical Visions: New Directions in Social Theory

Critical Visions: New Directions in Social Theory
By Anthony Elliott

Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc.
Number Of Pages: 240
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0742526895
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780742526891

Product Description:

This remarkable book develops a wide-ranging analysis of key issues and debates in contemporary social theory. Drawing social theory, cultural studies, and psychoanalysis together in a bold configuration, Elliott challenges the widespread view that social theory seems to have lost its way as a result of the diversification of conceptual approaches. In outlining an approach that places imagination and creativity at the center of social theory, Elliott argues that theoretical pluralism--from post-structuralism to postmodernism, from psychoanalysis to deconstruction--represents not the demise, but the renewal of critical social theory.

Summary: Vsions for the Future
Rating: 5

Brilliant! I've read Elliott previously, and this book is perhaps his best. Clear, focused and analytically distinct. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in theory.

Primer Of Special Relativity

A Primer Of Special Relativity is an unusually lucidintroduction to the subject specifically written for Indian students. It isintended to give the beginner a firm grounding for a more advanced course inrelativity. An entire chapter is devoted to applications of the theory toelucidate a large number of topics the students (B.Sc. Physics) come across inModern Physics. Detailed and well-selected examples are used to illuminateaspects of the theory as well as to show techniques of applications. A largenumber of illustrative examples enables the students to gain confidence to solveany problem in relativity normally expected of B.Sc. students. The book meetsthe complete requirements of a textbook for B.Sc. General and Honours courses inspecial theory of relativity recommended by the U.G.C. Existing syllabi in anumber of our universities have been taken into account in planning the book. The structure of the book permits a lot of flexibility. The book can thereforebe used as a text for a number of existing courses (with different allottedperiods) presently prevalent in many Indian universities.

The special theory of relativity is an essential part of the syllabus for B.Sc. (Physics) students in Indian
Universities. Though many excellent books on the subject are available, most of our students find them to
be high-brow because they are written by foreign authors with their own students in view as potential users.
An average Indian student often finds that though he has understood the theory, he cannot solve the
problems intended to test his grasp of the theory. This often results in loss of time for the student when
he tries to refer to a number of books one after another to gain confidence in problem solving.
This book is specifically written for a student who needs to be led quickly and yet with sympathy along
a path suitable for him so that he obtains a proficiency in the subject and develops the necessary skills and
confidence to solve the problems based on the theory. Every effort is made to ensure that an average student
masters the elements of the theory of special relativity in the shortest possible time without recourse to any
other book.
Syllabi in special theory of relativity from a number of Indian Universities have been consulted for
planning of this book. This book not only covers the syllabus recently suggested by the U.G.C. for B.Sc.
General and Honours courses in Indian Universities but it also provides latitude for additional topics to suit
individual taste. The structure of the book is such that it can be used as a textbook to suit individual taste,
or to suit different courses as per the time available for its completion. The style is so facile that if necessary
any topic can be assigned for self-study by the students. Besides the courses recommended by the U.G.C.,
the book can be used as a textbook for courses based on (i) first six chapters with some selected topics from
Chapter 7; (ii) first seven chapters; (iii) first eight chapters etc.
Throughout the writing of the book, the author has kept reminding himself of his own student days—
he has in view an average student putting in sincere efforts to get a clear understanding of elements of the
special theory of relativity. The author would be personally obliged to receive suggestions to make this
book more useful to our student community.
