Book Description:
Visual Basic.NET Unleashed is a complete book on the fundamentals of programming with a fully object-oriented language filled with new idioms and capabilities. In addition to the fundamentals, this book covers:
Free threading and multithreading
Inheritance
Virtual methods and shared methods
Structured exception handling
Event handling
Encapsulation at the namespace level
Web Services
.NET Framework compatibility
Amazon.com:
Aimed at the more experienced developer, Visual Basic .NET Unleashed will let you master the improved object-oriented capabilities of the newest version of Visual Basic quickly. Stressing "refactoring" and advanced class design features, this challenging tutorial proves that VB .NET is in the front rank of object-oriented programming languages today. The expert focus here on language features and refactoring (for efficient class design) is the hallmark of this text.
After an in-depth tutorial on the new IDE available in Visual Studio .NET, the author digs in with a fast-moving tour of VB .NET language features (including coverage of changes from VB6). The text starts with basic and then advanced topics, but its real emphasis is on advanced class design using classes and interfaces, with some excellent material on inheritance and polymorphism, as well as taking advantage of VB .NET's support for properties and reflection, among other topics. By continually advising how to rewrite classes to improve their maintainability, the author raises the bar here by presenting some tips and best practices beyond the obvious, using techniques invented by the Extreme Programming (XP) movement.
Later chapters turn to the basics of using Windows Forms and graphics programming (with GDI+), as well as ADO.NET for building database-driven Web applications. The book finishes with a nicely comprehensive listing of all VB6 to VB .NET changes, an invaluable resource for those making this transition.
If you are going to learn to design with objects, you might as well learn to do it right, this guide argues, using the expertise garnered from other programming languages. In all, this title shows how VB .NET supports basic and advanced object-oriented design features. It will be most profitably read by those with some previous object-oriented programming experience, though it will also benefit the beginner who wants to be challenged with some expert advice to get the most out of the new object support available in VB .NET. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: In-depth introduction to the Visual Studio .NET IDE (including common project tasks, configuration options, debugging, and built-in views), VB6 versus VB .NET language tutorial (including new .NET data types, variables, arrays, collections, and exception handling); extending VS .NET with macros (including Add-ins and Wizards), procedures and parameters, recursion, structures, enumerated types, reflection APIs, object-oriented design tutorial, (classes, access specifiers, properties, methods, nested classes), events in VB .NET: delegates and event handlers, inheritance and polymorphism (including interfaces), shared members, attributes (plus custom attributes); VB .NET console applications (debugging and running applications), multithreaded applications (lightweight and heavyweight threading), introduction to Windows Forms, GDI+ graphics (including basic shapes, curves and Bezier splines and images), tutorial for Web services (UDDI, DISCO, building and debugging Web services); basic Web programming with ASP.NET and ADO.NET, writing to the event log, list of changes between VB6 and VB .NET, refactoring VB code, and advice for effective object-oriented programming.
Summary: Excellent Resource for the CORE VB.NET Language. If looking for Databases with VB.NET, go get an ASP.NET book and stop whining.
Rating: 5
It doesn't matter if you're coding windows applications or web applications, this book is for you because web programmers ultimately have to know the VB.NET language! It doesn't matter if you're coding .NET 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0, this book is for you...at least until they come out with version 2. This book has taught me so much about the new OOP for VB.NET with real world explanations in a concise manor. Highly recommended even if you are one of those "I know it all, I don't need books" coder...don't be ridiculous...get this book, it's a great reference.
As another person I see in their review stated that this book lacked info on databases. This book is about the VB.NET language, not Databases! If you want more about VB.NET with Databases, that's what ASP.NET books are for!!! I can recommend many for that but this book as it's labeled is for VB.NET, the LANGUAGE!!! common people...lets wake up here.
I don't have money to waste and buy my books carefully..ones that I definitely will use and this is one of them I've used a lot.
Summary: No ADO, are you kidding me?
Rating: 1
you have to be kidding me. how do you have a book called "unleashed" and then not even go into any database usage? i dont think i have ever had to write an application that did not include some type of database usage, yet the author does not even cover it. nor does he go into forms in any detail except when it comes to web forms. where are the 2 pages it would have taken to detail how to populate a listBox? i bought this book off a sidewalk vendor for half price and i got ripped off.
Summary: There's Nothing to be unleashed! BAD BOOK
Rating: 1
The Title says "Visual Basic .Net Unleashed"... what a title? if you want to learn Visual Basic .Net, don't buy this book. Can we use definitions in writing programs? I don't think so. I bought this book because of its title but when i started reading it, its only full of definitions, less examples.
Summary: Good book for the vb.net language
Rating: 4
This is a good book for covering the actual language of vb.net (classes, delegates etc). There isn't much content on creating win or web forms or ado.net for that matter. You will need a separate book if you want to learn these techniques.
Summary: too much effort to go thru this one!!
Rating: 1
The authors seems to know what he is talking about and
the code looks good. However the downloadable code for
this book does not carry the code to call any of the scripts
in his book.
A separate script is needed and
needs to be written by the reader to call each script and
basically test if his vb.net scripts are execute and run successfully.
This approach forces hands-on approach but seeing how large
the .net framework is, my money would have been better spent
on another book.
With the effort required by this book, it could end up to be
a waste of time if his code doesn't work in the end.
This must be one of the worst books I have purchased ...

Summary: A CONCISE Java Grammar!
Rating: 5
I love this little one. From time to time, between working through and losing myself in half dozen or more heavy tomes of Java book, I would come back to this little one to get a grip of fundamentals and essentials. The book is concise and no nonsensical. I also like the banking application sample code. Practical enough. Who doesn't bank?
Summary: Good for experienced coders
Rating: 4
As the book's title shows, it's just a guide, a simple guide that you can not expect too much details out from it. Before learning Java, I am a Delphi coder. So, I was looking for some book to transfer me from Delphi to Java quickly. Within merely 170-odd pages, Sikora brings you an overview of the Java language. I think this guide just right fits my taste. Another thing to be mentioned, if you are a serious coder, a detailed reference is necessary. As what I am doing now, Java 2, The Complete Reference is by far the most suitable book for me, after I have an bird's eye view from Sikora's guide.
Summary: quickly learn Java?
Rating: 4
Indeed, Sikora offers a quick start to learning Java. He eshews an exhaustive enumeration of every core class in J2SE. Instead, he takes several high level topics and explains which common classes deal with these. A question arises. Can you indeed learn Java from so slender a book? Perhaps. Sikora teaches a core functionality. Made easier if you have already programmed in some other language.
For graphics, he leads you right into Swing. No time wasted on the earlier and inferior AWT classes.
For input/output, Java is more powerful than C or C++, but concomitantly harder to use. The coding is far more verbose, compared to a simple printf() or scanf() in C, for example. The minimal descriptions in Java given here are admirable in how he found the essence of enough to be useful.
Summary: Java for self-starters
Rating: 5
If I could only recommend one book to an experienced programmer who wanted to learn Java it would be this one. It's only 170 pages long and it doesn't contain anything that's unnecessary. But it does cover syntax, flow control, classes and methods, inheritance, exception handling, file I/O, GUI's, collections and threads. That's genuinely Java in a nutshell.
The author can offer such a stripped-down book, of course, because he assumes that the reader already understands programmatic flow control and objects, and can follow a basic inheritance hierarchy without tedious explanation.
Java isn't a difficult language: it can merely be made to seem so by textbooks that bury simple facts under mountains of verbiage. I hope other authors will take Zbigniew Sikora's "Java: Practical Guide for Programmers" as a model for textbooks for busy people.

Confessions of a Mortgage Insider
Have you wondered why the mortgage and banking industry are in their current shape of disarray? Did you ever wonder how some people managed to get something for nothing and leave us the average tax payer footing the bill? Are you curious why the once respectable mortgage industry became so corrupt and brought the US economy so quickly to its knees?
Denny Andrew's first book, Confessions of a Mortgage Insider, explores how the mortgage brokerage industry went into a spiraling failure that resulted in a complete meltdown of epidemic proportions. Confessions of a Mortgage Insider uncovers more than the excesses of the industry. It explores the people and personalities of those who worked in the industry through the personal stories of leaders, followers, slimy wheeler-dealers, and the victims. It tells the story through the eyes of mortgage broker Rick Agnew. Agnew goes from naïve freshman loan application agent to a diamond level broker whose life is filled with fast cars, fast women and fast parties. His up close and personal experiences with the industry open his eyes to the rampant fraud and chicanery of the industry.
Part story collection, part instruction, and part personal discovery, Andrew's book is a fun and interesting book that makes you angry with the money lust of the brokers, makes you cry for those who are victimized, and laugh at the antics of Rick Agnew the half man/half naughty child protagonist. Using illustrative stories and hilarious hi-jinx this book instructs even the most casual reader on the dangers of the current mortgage failure to the housing market. This book can be that 'tell all' source the casual reader has been seeking to establish some sanity from the current economic crisis in the mortgage industry.
Confessions of a Mortgage Insider prompts the reader to really assess where they are currently in their mortgage and financial stability and then to make a specific plan to get where they want to be. Living in the house of your dreams is not just a wish if you plan carefully and shop wisely for a mortgage and a mortgage broker, according to Andrews. The American dream is not over...it has just become something that once again is only realized through hard work and a good savings plan.
The mortgage bubble has been broken and according to Denny Andrews, it is not a bad thing that the party is over. His exposure of the ugly secrets of such a sleekly designed profiteering machine clearly illustrates the symptoms of our society's pervasive illness: excess. This fast moving book encourages responsible lending and commanding the life choices that promotes accountability and fiduciary common sense. Andrews captures the madness and mayhem through his original stories and then provides sound business advice that everyone can understand.

Summary: Great non-techy book

This book offers the novice and advanced user a non-technical approach without diminishing the important aspects. I am new to Photoshop and within 5 minutes of reading the first chapter, I could make a contact sheet and went forward from there, I'd recommend this book to any one who wants to learn Photoshop without all the technical jargon.
Summary: Claro, conciso, practico y muy didactico...
Rating: 5
Absolutamente recomendable...
Me gusta.
Estoy encantado de haberlo adquirido.
Summary: Best Photoshop book for Photographers
Rating: 5
I've used dozens of Photoshop books over the past 15 years and this is the best because it is informative but more importantly it is designed to be easy to read with useful projects dedicated to every page with big color pictures. Tips are good and because of the well-designed layout of the book they are always easy to find. Only bad thing is the intros to each chapter which are moronic and try to be too cool for their own good.
Summary: Great book for Digital Photography and Photoshop
Rating: 5
This is a good book for any beginning and intermediate digital photography and Photoshop level. The topics and examples are clear and easily to follow.
Summary: Starting Photoshop
Rating: 4
A good book for beginners, and don't forget to read the introduction, gives good info on sample files and images. Great examples and step by step instructions. I am taking photoshop 101 at a local Community College, my instructor uses this book instead of the college book. You have to put up with the writers sarcasm, but overall a great book for beginners to intermediate users of Adobe Photoshop CS 2. Not too much on Type (Text) manipulation, in a rating of 1 to 5, I give this book a 4.
